Find the missing pieces!
Most of my family and I enjoy jigsaw puzzles. Indeed, we have a
cupboard containing a tall stack of a variety of puzzles, most of which
have 1,000 pieces. In terms of jigsaw strategy, I am a firm believer in
finding the four corners and doing the edges first, but then I start with
the easiest part. I gradually move on to the harder parts using the
picture to work out where pieces go. I have a great sense of
satisfaction and joy when the picture is complete, but it is frustrating
and disappointing when I find there is a missing piece or two.
Why am I talking about jigsaws? Well, it relates to a couple of Adam’s
recent sermons. One was on finding parables in the everyday aspects
of life, and the other was on the importance of connectedness with
others. So, I would like to offer you a parable.
The kingdom of God is like a jigsaw puzzle, with not thousands but
millions of pieces. Each piece is, to a certain extent, similar but also
unique. To make the kingdom complete, all the pieces have to connect
with each other. God has the picture, the plan, for the kingdom and for
it to come to fruition all the pieces must be fitted in. All the pieces are
important, including those at the edges, even though they have fewer
connections. If there are gaps in the jigsaw we must find the missing
pieces – only when they are in place and connected will the kingdom
be complete. And when that happens it will be a thing of great beauty
and joy.
